Build-A-Bike (1 of 8)

Gain a comprehensive overview of bicycle mechanics in this 8 week Build-A-Bike course. We cover overhauling and adjusting bottom brackets, headsets and hubs, wheel truing, brake, shifter and derailleur adjustment and any other finishing work, detail and trouble shooting.

This course is 8 sessions beginning Monday January 28th, meeting once a week every Monday from 7pm-10.

Participants need a project bike for this course. A multi-gear derailleur bike with cable activated brakes is best suited for this course. There are many options for project bikes. You can use your own, borrow one from us or get something that needs a complete overhaul. Participants can get a lot of value out of the class by fixing up a bike of their own or a friends. The minimum donation for the class is equal or less then it would cost to have a shop perform the work. Feel free to contact the instructor for input and guidance on a project bike before the start of the course.

West Town Bikes will provide basic supplies such as cables, housing, bearings, grease and other shop supplies. Used parts are available at WTB and new parts and accessories can be purchased through our sales shop, Ciclo Urbano. WTB has storage space for the project bike, parts and supplies while the class is running. Participants must take the bike and all other belongings from WTB at the end of the course.

In week 1 we will give an overview of West Town Bikes, history, shop policies and usage.  We will learn types of bikes, frame materials, names of parts of a bike, and the names of the tools used at work stations. We will also go over ways to diagnose a bicycle for repair. The first night is a lot of talking and vocabulary that is used throughout the rest of the course.
