Build your own set of wheels!

Participants learn to determine spoke length for a hub and rim of choice, lace spokes into a wheel, apply tension to spokes, and make a wheel round and true. Wheel building theory will also be discussed in class. Participants may choose either a one or two night course to build either a single wheel or a set.

Participants must provide their own materials and need to order spokes, hubs, and rims from a retail shop prior to class. Keep in mind that most shops require 1-2 weeks to receive parts. Visit some our friends at Boulevard Bikes, Rapid Transit and Yo Jimbo's Garage to order materials and get expert service and insight. Find them and and other bike shops along with reviews and ratings at www.chicagobikeshops.info

Quick suggestions on choice of parts: Front and rear 32 or 36 hole hubs, double wall alloy rims with matching hole count, stainless steel spokes, 3 cross spoke pattern, avoid mixing large flange hubs with deep section rims.

Following these suggestions will usually make for a strong wheel that is easy to build. Most high quality wheels are built in this manner. Make sure to contact Lawyer Jim for his recommendations before class and buying materials.
