In week 7 we cover Shifters and Derailleurs. We will add new shifter cables and housing to project bikes. Chains will be installed and we will cover how to measure appropriate chain length. We will also check and align front and rear derailleurs as well as check and adjust the limit screws of the derailleurs. We will cover the difference between friction and index shifting and go over how to adjust shifting of both. This will include an overview of the parts worked on and the tools used for this procedure.
In week 8 we will review the past 7 weeks and have a course evaluation. We will also complete all finishing work on project bikes including adding accessories (racks, fenders, lights, etc) and other finishing work such as taping up handlebars. Test rides are recommended so that adjustments can be made.
In week 5 we cover wheel truing, this is straightening the wheel by adjusting spoke tension. This will include an overview of the parts worked on and the tools used for this procedure.
Join us every Saturday from 12 till 6pm to work on your bike in a relaxed, social atmosphere. Participants share tips and an instructor will be there to help. The instructor's ability to assist you will be limited by time and the total number of participants. Participants should be familiar with the repairs they plan to work on. Come on out, fix your bike, get some grease on your hands, and ride off with a better bike and more know-how than you had when you arrived!
In week 4 we cover Hubs. We will overhaul the front and rear hub of wheels including removal of the freewheel/cassette. This will include an overview of the parts worked on and the tools used for this procedure.
In week 3 we cover Bottom Brackets. We will overhaul the bottom bracket on project bikes including removal of crank arms. This will include an overview of the parts worked on and the tools used for this procedure. We will also discuss types of bottom brackets.
In week 2 we cover Headsets. We will overhaul the headset on project bikes including removal of the stem and handlebars, disassembly and cleaning of the headset, repacking bearings and grease, and the re-assembly and adjustment of the headset, stem and bars. This will include an overview of the parts worked on and the tools used for this procedure. Both Threaded and Threadless Headsets will be covered.
This course is 8 sessions beginning Thursday Septmeber 14th, meeting once a week every Thursday from 7pm-10.
