WTB has partnered with After School Matters to provide youth programs in Chicago Public Schools since 2005. We currently have 70 participants between the programs among 3 sites. Our advanced program is on site with Lebster Pabon and there are Bike Clubs at Roosevelt High School and Kelvyn Park High School.
Teens learn about bicycle maintenance and repair, safe riding and cycling for sport, exercise and transportation. These programs go on rides to many different destinations, complete a resume and have the opportunity to earn a bike, bike parts, accessories and gear along with an ASM stipend. Participants are educated on the business practices of a professional bike shop. Development includes financial counseling, health and wellness education, presentation experience, map reading and urban navigation, safe cycling instruction, transportation options, and field trips throughout Chicago. Apply here if you are a CPS student that wishes to participate.
Teens that successfully complete the program are eligible for employment with the Chicago Park District and West Town Bikes including Jr. Bicycling Ambassadors with the Chicago Department of Transportation, Jr. Camp Counselors with the Chicago Park District, Assistant Instructors for elementary school bike programs with West Town Bikes, and entry level bike builder and mechanic positions at Ciclo Urbano and other are bike shops.
